The guided tour commences in view of Maynooth Castle. From the Silken Thomas Yew, Ireland’s oldest native tree (700-800 years old), the tour pauses at Stoyte House where St Patrick’s College was established in 1795. Next it passes through the archway at Callan Hall, named for the renowned nineteenth-century physicist, Nicholas Callan, and moves through St Joseph’s Square, the iconic quadrangle framed by Victorian and Neo-Gothic heritage buildings. There’s a glimpse of the storied Ghost Room before the tour enters the cloisters of St Patrick’s House, designed by the legendary A.W. Pugin. The visit concludes in the College Chapel, the largest choir chapel in the world and a breathtaking example of Neo-Gothic architecture, where the visitor cannot fail to be impressed by the oak carvings, the Rose Window, the stained-glass light and the canvas medallions that adorn the ceiling.

The National Science Museum is just a few minutes' walk away and is open on tour days. Callan's scientific equipment is at the heart of the exhibition and there is also a collection of ecclesiastical artifacts on display. Admission is free.
