Module Aims
- To introduce students to the history of the Church in the Early Modern and Modern Periods
- Provide students with a good overview of the most up to date scholarship on the history of Early Modern and Modern Christianity
Learning Outcomes
- — Be able to fluently discuss the principal events and personalities of post-Reformation Christianity up to the French Revolution
- — Be familiar with the efforts to implement Tridentine reform across Europe
- — Have a good understanding of the historical debates surrounding the issue of inculturation in missionary activity, and the continuing relevance of these issues today
- — Comprehend the evolving relationship between secular and religious authorities in the early modern period and how these developments have shaped our world to the present day
- — Understand the complexities of the relationship between religion and science during this period and the relevance of this point for current interdisciplinary discussions
- — Appreciate the effect of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era on the Christian Church
