Module Aims
Participants are introduced to an overview of historical development of music in the context of Catholic Liturgy over two thousand years. Identifying the scriptural and doctrinal sources, the module will help them to be cognisant of contemporary Church teaching in this area. The module provides an opportunity to look at the principles, traditions and guidance for music in the liturgical forum and their significance in how liturgy is celebrated today. Participants will explore the practical aspects of selecting, preparing, and performing music for sacraments and other liturgical celebrations.

- Music in the Liturgical Year Marriage and Funerals during the Liturgical Year

- The Broadcasting of Liturgy and Liturgical Music.
Learning Outcomes
- — LO1: Present a critical account of the theological significance of music as an integral part of the liturgical celebration;
- — LO2: Outline the Church’s official teaching on music in the liturgy;
- — LO3: Trace the major developments in Catholic sacred music through various historical epochs;
- — LO4: Work collaboratively to utilise musical, liturgical, theological and pastoral judgments in the selection of appropriate music for worship;
- — LO5: Distinguish various different types and forms of ritual music and where to utilise them appropriately within the liturgy.
