One of the most skillfully-composed narrative sections in the Bible is the story of David in the First and Second Books of Samuel. This module will explore some of the insights gained into this story by a narrative reading of selected sections of the story. Consideration will be given to aspects such as characterization, plot, settings, rhetoric, and viewpoint.
• The narrative introduction of David: his anointing by Samuel and his conflict with Goliath.
• Stories of rivalry between Saul and David, culminating in Saul’s death and David’s lament.
• David’s conquest of Jerusalem and the promise of an eternal dynasty.
• David’s sin with Bathsheba and his subsequent repentance. • David’s census and his intercession for the people of Israel.
