Module Aims

The aims of this course are to enable learners to develop academic writing skills and to introduce them to the methods of philosophical thinking and research. The learners will learn the structure of academic essays, how to form a thesis statement and supporting argument, and to articulate their thinking in clear and grammatically correct prose. They will learn to find and cite sources from the library. They will learn logic, the method of philosophy, and see its application to real world issues.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop fundamental academic writing skills, such as the ability to form a thesis statement and support it, and to articulate one’s ideas in clear and grammatically correct writing.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the method of philosophy, i.e. logic, and its application.
  • Demonstrate fundamental research skills, such as the ability to find sources at the library and cite sources correctly.
  • Recognise the applicability of philosophy to topics in public discourse.
