Module Aims

In this module we consider some of the perennial texts in modern philosophy and situate them in the development of the history of philosophy. The texts we will consider are: Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy, Spinoza, Ethics, Leibniz, Monadology, Locke, Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Hume, Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Kant, Critique of Pure Reason. We will note the key contributions that these texts made to the development of modern philosophy and observe how these texts (and thinkers) served to characterise modern philosophy as a distinctive period in philosophical thought.
