Module Aims
This module aims to give student first-hand experience of the New Testament, some of its core texts, motifs and contexts, by engaging with the Gospel of Luke. This first-hand knowledge will, in turn, provide the foundations for an active engagement with key gospel passages which lie at the heart of a teacher’s handing on of faith.
Indicative Syllabus
- What is the New Testament and what is its composition.
- The geography, history, and peoples of the New Testament
- The truth of Scripture
- New Testament Christology / images of Jesus – the 4 Gospel portraits of Jesus
- Narrative tools to help break the code of what the text means. Types of texts – the importance of genre to understand meaning: miracle, parable, and metaphor.
- How does the world of the Bible interact with our world.
Learning Outcomes
- — MIMLO 01: Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the shape and contours of the New Testament and develop an ability to approach it as the living word of God.
- — MIMLO 02: Display a comprehensive knowledge of the Gospel of Luke, its key characters, narrative and structure and core theological values.
- — MIMLO 03: Present the key gospel stories and characters in a way that permits learners to illuminate the way of discipleship and faith.
- — MIMLO 04: Demonstrate an approach the New Testament in such a way that the skills and knowledge acquired will provide a foundation for ongoing engagement with the Bible.
