Dr Simon Nolan O.Carm, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at St Patrick’s Pontifical University, Maynooth will be presenting his paper The Relationship between Intellect and Will in the Quaestiones quodlibetales of Sibert de Beka O.Carm at the Workshop on Medieval Carmelite Scholastics at CISA (Centro Internazionale Sant’Alberto), in Rome on Fri 28th April.

Organised under the auspices of the IRHT (L’Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes) of the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and the Institutum Carmelitanum, Rome, this workshop runs from 27th -30th April.

This workshop (the first of its kind) will assemble scholars who will explore the rich heritage of Carmelite scholasticism in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries associated with the universities of Paris, Oxford, Cologne, Vienna, and elsewhere. The workshop is in honour of Carmelite scholar, Bartomeu Xiberta O. Carm. (1897-1967), who authored a significant body of work in medieval studies that still represents a pioneering approach to the scholastic heritage of the Carmelite Order. Xiberta was also a significant theologian at the Second Vatican Council, influencing in particular the Council’s approach to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
