A French Jesuit, Xavier de Bénazé, visited SPPU on 19th September to speak on ecological spirituality. In a postgraduate seminar, he showed how eco-spirituality is not a New Age fad but is deeply rooted in Scripture and Catholic tradition. He pointed to the heritage of saints such as Hildegard of Bingen, Kateri Tekakwitha, and Francis of Assisi, as well as the early Irish monks and nuns. In his evening lecture he shared from his experience of working in a new postgraduate eco-village at Forges southeast of Paris (Campus de la transition) and an eco-spirituality retreat centre near Lyon (Le Châtelard). He first asked us to consider where we feel most connected to creation. Then he outlined six paths towards ecological transition: oikos (science), ethics (ethics), nomos (law and economics), logos (artistic expression and story), praxis (action), and dynamis (spirituality).
