We remember with deep respect and gratitude three esteemed colleagues who have recently passed away:

Msgr. Denis O’Callaghan was a priest of the Diocese of Cloyne and a former Vice-President of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. Known for his steadfast dedication to pastoral ministry and theological education, he served in various capacities over decades, shaping the lives of seminarians and clergy alike. His tenure as Vice-President highlighted his commitment to academic rigour and the spiritual formation of students.

In addition to his administrative and teaching roles at Maynooth, Msgr. O’Callaghan spent many years in parish ministry, including his time as Parish Priest of Mallow. Even in retirement, he remained a guiding presence in the community, offering counsel and support.

He passed away peacefully on 26 November 2024.

Fr. Bede McGregor, a Dominican friar, was a beloved figure in the academic and pastoral life of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. A learned theologian, he brought the richness of the Dominican intellectual tradition to his teaching and mentoring. His focus on mission studies made him a respected teacher among his peers and students.

Fr. McGregor served Maynooth not only as an academic but also as a mentor, known for his compassionate listening and thoughtful advice. His ministry extended beyond the classroom, as he was often sought out for spiritual direction and pastoral care.

Fr. McGregor’s presence was a reminder of the Dominican motto Veritas—truth—manifested in his life of simplicity, humility, and service. His passed away peacefully on 25 November 2024.

Fr. Raphael Gallagher, C.Ss.R.

Fr. Raphael GALLAGHER C.Ss.R.

Fr. Raphael Gallagher, a member of the Redemptorist order, was an internationally recognised moral theologian. He some years lecturing at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. His career flourished at the esteemed Alfonsianium in Rome, where he was renowned for his scholarly contributions and his ability to make complex theological ideas accessible to students.

Fr. Gallagher’s work often focused on the integration of moral theology with pastoral practice. He had a particular interest in conscience formation and the ethical challenges facing modern Christians.

Beyond his academic achievements, Fr. Gallagher was deeply committed to the Redemptorist charism. His ability to connect theological principles with real-world applications made him a trusted advisor and mentor. His passing is a profound loss to the academic community, the Redemptorists, and all who benefited from his wisdom and kindness.

He passed away peacefully on 3rd December 2024.
