Members of the SPPU systematic theology unit have contributed new chapters to a research handbook that has been published by T&T Clark/Bloomsbury, which offers a comprehensive guide to Modern Theology, and is edited by Philip Ziegler and R. David Nelson. Joshua Furnal contributed a chapter on Romano Guardini, Andrew Meszaros contributed a chapter on John Henry Newman, and Julia Meszaros contributed a chapter on Paul Tillich.
This groundbreaking theological reference work is comprised of 142 chapters that explore the essential contexts, trajectories, movements, and concerns that have shaped modern theology, and presents detailed analyses of influential theologians who have defined theological discourse during this period. This new handbook promises to be an invaluable resource for both students beginning their theological studies and established researchers seeking authoritative reference material on modern Christian theological thought.
Having three colleagues from the same institution contribute chapters to a major research companion is a significant marker of research excellence because research handbooks of this nature typically aim to feature the leading voices and recognized experts in the field. Having multiple contributors from one institution suggests a concentration of expertise and scholarly recognition in modern theology at SPPU. Moreover, the SPPU collaboration with the editors grew out of ‘The Future of Systematic Theology’ symposium hosted in Maynooth in 2023, which reinforced strong international research networks.
