We are delighted to welcome the proclamation of St John Henry Newman as a Doctor of the Church — a recognition of his enduring witness to conscience, truth, and the harmony of faith and reason.
Newman’s story is part of our own here at St Patrick’s Pontifical University, Maynooth. He shared a deep friendship with our former President Dr Charles William Russell, writing in his Apologia pro Vita Sua:
“He had, perhaps, more to do with my conversion than any one else.”
That bond reminds us that great ideas often take root through friendship and shared search for truth.
We’re also proud that Dr Andrew Meszaros, formerly of our faculty and now St John Henry Newman Chair at the Angelicum, Rome, played a role in the theological process leading to this honour.
As the Church celebrates Newman’s legacy, we renew our own mission to form minds and hearts in that same spirit where “heart speaks unto heart.”
