St Patrick’s Pontifical University, Maynooth, is honoured that our Faculty colleague Prof. Tobias Winright, Professor of Moral Theology has been invited to participate in the Global Summit of Nobel Laureates, World Leaders, and AI Experts at the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo towards the Rome Declaration for an Unarmed and Disarming Peace.
Prof. Winright will participate in a working group speaking to Faith Traditions and the Moral imaginations of peace.
This summit from 14-16 July includes; 30 Nobel Laureates, 30 countries represented, Emeritus Heads of State and Government, 20 top AI leaders - including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, AARU and Anthropic - and 30 of the world’s top universities and research institutions.
The Vatican, at Borgo Laudato Si’ in the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo, will host the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear War, bringing together more than 200 of the world's most distinguished figures and representatives of leading international research institutions in the fields of peace and AI. Inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical Magnifica humanitas, dedicated to the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence, the Assembly takes place at a time marked by international conflict, instability, and a worsening nuclear scenario, and reflects the Pope’s vision of an ‘Unarmed and Disarming Peace’. It will culminate in the drafting of the Rome Declaration for an Unarmed and Disarming Peace in the age of artificial intelligence, nuclear and autonomous weapons, new digital protocols, and emerging models of digital development.
The event will conclude on 16 July with a solemn session at Capitoline Hill, in the Giulio Cesare Hall.
For three days, 30 Nobel Laureates and Nobel-laureate organizations, Emeritus Heads of State and Government, 20 top AI leaders - including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, AARU and Anthropic - and 30 of the world's leading universities and research institutions will engage in a sort of Conclave on the major challenges of the contemporary world: international security, governance of emerging technologies, disarmament, and the building of a peace-oriented economy. At the center of the debate will be the search for a new global paradigm capable of combining innovation, responsibility, and ethics.
The initiative is supported by the Nobel Laureates Assembly for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the Nobel Women's Initiative, IPPNW – International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Pugwash, the Yunus Center, the Catholic University of America, the University of Chicago – Existential Risk Laboratory, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, the University of Notre Dame, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and Soka Gakkai, with the Domus Communis Foundation serving as General Secretariat.
Representatives from the world's leading universities will be in attendance, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Columbia University, Princeton University, University of California, Berkeley, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, University of Oxford, University of Manchester, Collège de France, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Tsinghua University, Queen's University, Simon Fraser University, Australian National University, University of Antwerp, St Patrick's Pontifical University, Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata, Balseiro Institute University of Southern California and International Telematic University UniNettuno.
The Rome Declaration for an Unarmed and Disarming Peace in the age of artificial intelligence, nuclear and autonomous weapons, new digital protocols and emerging models of digital development, to be presented at the close of the proceedings, aims to set out principles and guidelines for the governance of artificial intelligence, fostering a vision of international security grounded in cooperation, human dignity, integral development and peace among peoples.
