Module Aims
- To introduce students to theology as an academic discipline. The student will engage in a critical reflection on the nature of the theological enterprise.
- To explore Christianity as a cultural, anthropological and religious phenomenon and its progression since the First Century AD.
- To introduce the person of Jesus Christ by means of the reading of the gospel of Luke.
- To offer a survey of the history of the Christian Church and to highlight its most significant moments and people.
- To introduce the theological study of the beliefs and practices of the Christian faith, providing students with a general overview of the major themes of Christian theological reflection.
- To show how the Christian faith has manifested itself over two millennia, principally through the medium of art, music and literature.
- To explain key words and concepts pertaining to Christianity.
- To explain key words and concepts necessary to begin a study of theology.
Learning Outcomes
- — Will be able to articulate the life and ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the prism of Luke’s Gospel.
- — Will be able to articulate the beginnings of the Early Church through the prism of the Acts of the Apostles.
- — Will be able to explain the twelve articles of the Apostles’ Creed, leading to an articulation of the key arguments for the existence of God, the divinity of Christ, and the resurrection.
- — Will be able to articulate a basic understanding of theology.
- — Will understand Christianity as a world religion and its development during the course of history.
- — Will be able to identify the major characteristics, achievements and people of the historical periods (i.e., the development of Christianity through the Apostolic, Patristic, Medieval, and Modern periods), including the major ecumenical Councils (e.g., Nicaea, Trent, Vatican II).
