Reforming the Church: Global Perspectives

The worldwide synodal process begun by Pope Francis a few years ago will culminate with a Synodal Assembly in Rome in October. It will address the questions: 'How does the journeying together which takes place today on different levels (from the local to the universal) allow the Church proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the mission entrusted to Her; and what steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow as a synodal Church?'

Against this backdrop, Declan Marmion and Salvador Ryan, along with theologians and experts from around the globe, explore the challenges facing the synodal project of Pope Francis in different continents. What emerges is a reflection on the theme of reform within the church: what it has meant in the past, what it means for us now, and what it might mean in the future. Topics include ecclesial transfiguration and the episcopacy, clerical sex abuse, globalization of the church, and the theology of synodality. A number of chapters address issues of more local, or culturally-specific, significance, in this way mirroring the results of synodal consultations conducted worldwide.
